Thirteen years ago, due to cuts in state funds and changes in mental care philosophy, The Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, after a 104 years of operation, was permanently shut down. Treatment was ended, doors were locked, and patients were transfered elswhere while some were unleashed onto the streets.
The spires of the clinic still stretch for the skies, walls still breathe with disorder, and the soul of the forlorn buildings still lingers inside. And if you’re not careful, you might unsettle a restless visitor, hiding in the shadows behind overgrown bushes, missing the only place they had called "home."
Pictured here are Intermediate Ward 16 and Convalescence Ward 2 on the Men's Wing of Building 50, built in 1885.
Spooky, yet beautiful!I'm pretty sure this is across from my school. Is it part of the state hospital? It looks different at night. If it is, there is a huge system of tunnels underneath it that I am going to visit soon
