This compound is nestled in a gulch over a mile from the road, miles further from the nearest settlement. Every building here was actively used until the early 1970s, but it as since been untouched by people—the Ford Fairlane still parked by the garage, the elevator still parked against the grain bin. I don't think cattle even graze the land any longer. The only sounds were the the rustling grass and a shrieking metal gate swaying in the wind.

Upon peeking through a small granary window, a barn owl defending its nest flew at me, swiped the hat off my head and dropped it on top of the farmhouse.
