I'm not sure if this has been said yet, but I'm sure many are thinking it either way.
I think we can all agree that square photos can be great. It takes some ingenuity to accomplish a successful rule-of-thirds composition within that 3x3 frame. And when it works, it's a beautiful thing. There is a certain... natural, nostalgic aesthetic about it. Since the passing of Polaroid it has gained even more new found appreciation.
A frame full of just one vibrant color can be visually interesting, too. It will really stand out on it's own. Arrange dozens of them on one page, however, and it's difficult to appreciate originality of just one, because they all look the same!
It would be hypocritical of me to bash these ideas entirely. But does anyone else think that this approach has been getting an absurd amount of attention and maybe even undermining content or thought?
Come on, dudes. We can do better. There's some better stuff out there to share and higher level ideas to try out. Just because square thumbnails line up nicely in an article and oblong deviations are shrunk to inconvenient sizes doesn't mean attention should be limited to the former.

I will never grow tired of this song.
The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking

Some of you already know, but now that it's well-established, I'd like to draw your attention to my stock image account, because it's badass:

I've collected a lot of humorous, odd, and interesting images over the years and I can't wait to use and share them with you all. Enjoy!
